This presentation deals with treating the feet of patients with chronic venous insufficiency. The author has extensive experience in this procedure and provides not only his experience and techniques but also notes where others may choose to deviate from the techniques. Dr. Mauriello notes, “right is what’s left after doing everything wrong” and with more than 30 years of phlebology practice, he admits to plenty of experience with both. He provides a thorough overview of the various manifestations of CVI around the feet and ankles and explains the different treatment methods available depending upon the patient presentations and complaints. Sclerotherapy is covered in detail with emphasis on how to choose the proper sclerosants for a given patient and its optimal use. Additionally, microphlebectomy of veins around the foot is also explained. With generous photographs demonstrating all these techniques, this is a unique and highly recommended course on this subject.

Course Objectives:

  • Learn the terminology for venous disease of the foot
  • Acquire a knowledge of the classification of various sclerosants
  • Learn to determine if phlebectomy or sclerotherapy is preferred for treatment of the foot
  • Learn the optimal volume and strengths of sclerosants to use on the ankle
  • Describe the techniques necessary to perform phlebectomy
  • Identify the potential complications from these procedures and their incidence

STANDARDCOURSE-130

Please login or register to take this course.

Many of the techniques currently used in the treatment of these patients carry significant risk of nerve injury – a very devastating complication. The sonographer is uniquely qualified to provide guidance in this area as nerves can successfully be imaged with quality ultrasound. Pre and peri operative knowledge of the precise location of important nerves can allow the phlebologist to safely avoid most of the potential complications. This presentation provides a thorough overview of the particular nerves of interest in this arena. Dr. Mauriello is uniquely and eminently qualified to speak on this subject given his background in anesthesia coupled with 3 decades exclusively practicing phlebology.

Course Objectives

  • Learn the nerve anatomy of the leg and how to identify them with ultrasound
  • Describe the types of nerves present in the limb
  • Understand the range of potential nerve complications from various venous treatments and their incidence
  • Learn how to avoid these potentially devastating complications
